De-Junk Your Desk
Spice4Life Archive 4 easy steps to organise your space
1. Where to start. Always start with what you can see – then sort through what is behind closed doors and drawers. Touch each and every item and make an immediate decision as to what needs to happen to it.
2. De-clutter your desk. Shifting paper is distracting and takes up valuable time. Use clearly labeled in/out trays. Label the trays ‘to file’, ‘to do’, ‘to pay’, ‘to delegate’, ‘to read’, ‘to capture’, etc.)
3. Filing not piling. Create broad categories for your files and file like categories together for easy retrieval. Decide on a naming system and stick to it using colours and labels to keep you focused. Dedicate the last 20 minutes of your work week to filing to avoid an overwhelming paper build up.
4. Rearrange your furniture. Bring filing cabinets, frequently used reference materials and daily office supplies within arm’s reach of your desk. If you have to get up to put something away, chances are that you won’t do it.

Choosing a Colour Scheme
Spice4Life Archive Here are some easy steps for choosing a colour scheme for a room in your home:
Affordable decor options
Spice4Life Archive It's not important how much money you spend on decorating but how wisely you spend it. Imagination is your most potent ally. So put on your decorating thinking cap to save money and add style.
Within a budget Let's face it, few of us have the luxury of a sky's-the-limit budget for home decorating. Even for top interior designers, an unlimited budget is a rarity. Many confess they actually do their best work when they have to rely on creativity instead of cash.
High style doesn't have to mean high cost. Use inexpensive materials lavishly and expensive materials judiciously. Elegance is found in details, whether it's sewing trims, borders, and appliqué, or painting colour washes and stries. Remember that the objective is not just to see how inexpensively you can get by but also to make every money-saving method count. If you do your own painting, you'll have more funds left for furnishings, frills, and labour.
Make the most of what you have and then fill in the blanks. Some of the best design ideas are free. Simply rearranging the furniture - floating it away from the walls, or turning it on the diagonal - can transform a tired room. Experiment with what's on hand before you go shopping for replacements.
A Room for play
Spice4Life Archive If there are two things that kids have an abundance of its energy and imagination. A playroom is a great way to offer children a space that stimulates creative play and provides endless hours of entertainment. When planning a playroom for toddlers and tots, bear in mind that bright colours and bold shapes stimulate young minds.
For most parents the challenging part is finding a decorating theme to create a unique design for your child, bearing in mind that it is bright colours and bold shapes that stimulate children and the more light-hearted the theme the more fun the children seem to have.
A passion for old world charm
Spice4Life Archive When discussing Italian design there are two opposing elements to consider. The first has its roots in culture and heritage in areas such as Tuscany and Venice, the second is the fact that Italian design is considered the definitive source of contemporary ideas and functional creativity.
Cutting edge interior design Italian interior design leads in a way that is more than Modern and does not quite fit the understanding of Contemporary. It’s a way of marrying top Italian design creations with traditional objects and spaces.
Privacy blinds new to the South African market
Spice4Life Archive Decor enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that AMERICAN shutters, a leader and pioneer in custom-made shutters and blinds, has launched its new PRIVACY range of wooden blinds.
What sets this range apart from others are the unique louvres without slots and the improved louvre closures, which not only offer a contemporary appearance but also improved light block and privacy features. “Until now, those in the market for wooden blinds have been hugely limited in their ability to customise their blinds, as the blinds are largely imported in a made-up state, and then cut to size locally.
Be more energy savvy in 2011
Spice4Life Archive With energy conservation and eco-friendly practices making headlines everywhere, ‘going green’ is certainly in vogue. However the question remains: What should you be doing about it? The most obvious place to start is by switching to energy efficient lighting, as this will greatly reduce your energy consumption and hence expenditure, as well as ensuring a better future for the planet.
You can now replace almost any standard household incandescent globe with an energy efficient equivalent, and by converting to energy efficient lights you can save 80% on your lighting bill alone.
The most generally used globe in households is still the Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) which uses a fifth of the electricity a normal household globe does, but emits around five times the light per watt, and is available in a variety of shapes and sizes. A CFL also burns much cooler than an incandescent lamp because it converts 80% of electricity into light and 20% into heat.
Eco friendly tiles
Spice4Life Archive Eco friendly tiles are hard to find and generally fairly expensive. We have an inexpensive Brazilian tile that is eco friendly and unique looking.
It has the same look and feel as sand and is available locally in two colours, being Sand and Grey.
This tile is slip resistant and can be used on external areas such as patio’s and surrounding swimming pools. Unlike using natural stone such as sandstone, travertine or slate, these tiles do not need to be sealed after being laid. They are therefore maintenance free which is a huge long term saving.
Ceiling fans to transform any room
Spice4Life Archive Ceiling fans add character to almost any room, offering a great way to keep cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Eurolux’s latest range of ceiling fans certainly has a fan to suit every taste and requirement.
The Eurolux Swirl ceiling fan comes in a stylish antique brass or satin chrome finish with three blades featuring a cherry wood finish on the one side and a maple wood finish on the other - simply turn the blades over to change the fan’s appearance. Shaun Bouchier, director at Eurolux, says contrasting or reversible ceiling fan blades are an innovative addition to ceiling fan blade design. “The two different finishes on either side of the blade add to the glamour quotient of your interior and allow for far greater versatility than the standard, single tone blades.”
The Swirl fan comes standard with a remote control and offers a three speed function, together with a forward and reverse motion. Bouchier explains that ceiling fans are designed to circulate air with a downdraft, yet they can also be set to create an upward circulation. “You have to select the reverse motion on the fan to get this effect, allowing the updraft to aid the heating of the room,” he says.

Spice4Life Archive In this Top Billing video clip, Aidan helps Poppy Ntshongwana, of 5fm fame, bring a burst of colour into her home.

Aidan also gives Poppy a lesson in how to restore antique furniture as the pair attempt to revive two carved, chip n dale chairs. Like the wall, the chairs are given a new coat of paint as well as a second chance to showcase their beauty.

Simple Steps to Securing your Home
Spice4Life Archive One of the biggest problems facing Security Company’s is the amount of time they spend dealing with false alarms. About 90% of all alerts they receive are caused by something other than an actual burglary, an attempted burglary, or a panic button which has been activated with genuine intent.
Although we all know that accidents do happen, false alarms can often be prevented and they waste precious time.
Whilst security companies are investigating or responding to false alarms, there may be a more urgent need elsewhere. This is why their operational procedure is to contact the premises first in order to determine the reasons the alarm has been set off. If there is no response or if there is a vehicle in the immediate area your security company will treat it as an urgent situation.
Traditional Values
Spice4Life Archive Traditionally styled homes make generous use of antiques or high quality furniture reproductions, rich woods, over stuffed seating and muted, understated colours. The emphasis is on comfort, style and classic, refined elegance resulting in a timeless look that brings warmth to a home.
Fabrics are luxurious and rich, fixtures are of high quality, and accessories may include paintings, vintage prints, sculpture and framed personal mementos. Furniture pieces exude luxury, opulence and quality workmanship and have soft curved lines with plenty of detail and inlays.
