Reach For A Dream celebrates 25 years of making dreams come true
Thursday, June 27, 2013 - 14:55
25 years of Inspiring Hope
The journey of Reach For A Dream began 25 years ago after our founder, Owen Parnell, read an article on the Make-A-Wish foundation in Reader’s Digest. And the idea to inspire hope in children who are fighting a life threatening illness was born. The first dream, to ride on a pony and a motorcycle, was fulfilled on the 7th July 1988 for little JC Steinman; and since that 1st dream 25 years ago, Reach For A Dream has fulfilled over 12 000 dreams and touched the lives of over 30 000 children through our projects and outings.
Over the years we have grown from strength to strength, opening 7 branches across the country with a head office in Johannesburg. Over the last 10 years we have introduced a total of 7 projects to our portfolio which has increased our interaction with our dream children.
The fulfilment of these dreams inspires hope and courage in the dreamer and helps them believe that tomorrow is worth fighting for. Fulfilling dreams enables children to experience a fun aspect of life which they do not get to participate in due to their illness. The positive effect of the "dream come true" lingers, and children often respond better to their medication.
This year on Saturday 7th July, Reach For A Dream celebrates 25 years of making dreams come true for children fighting life threatening illnesses. In this quarter of a century, no dream has ever been too big or too small and we believe that dreams have no limit. The impact of each dream fulfilled lingers and the Foundation strives to go beyond imagination to fulfil dreams and inspire hope in the hearts of these special children.
“I am very excited for the year ahead as it is our 25th anniversary and we are very proud of this achievement. This would not have been possible without the dedicated and passionate effort from all our staff and volunteers and support from our Board of Directors. We would also not have been able to reach this milestone without the wonderful and ongoing support from all our donors. Without their help we would not be able to make a difference in the lives of these children fighting life threatening illnesses.” said Julia Sotirianakos, the CEO of Reach For A Dream.
To celebrate 25 years of fulfilling dreams and special projects for children in hospitals and homes across South Africa, the Foundation will be hosting many special events for the children and their families.
