Gillian Slovo's An Honourable Man

An Honourable Manis a novel of extraordinary power that combines the intimate and the epic, exploring the folly of the Empire through the fine grain of human experience and emotion.
Set in 1884 in Khartoum, General Gordon faces the prospect of death as the city is besieged, and yet he is still endeavours to protect a young boy he rescued from the English dockyard slums. Rapidly approaching the city with the Camel Corps is Doctor John Clarke, a man who has joined the expedition to rescue the general. And back in London, as controversy rages over the expedition the wife of the doctor finds herself adrift and isolated. Her only release comes from an addiction to laudanum, which will take her into Victorian London’s darkest corners.
