Teen Yoga

Lia Mundell is a second year Wits English Major student who has just completed the internationally certified 200 hour Yoga Teacher’s Training Certificate at Yoga Warrior Studio in Rosebank, Johannesburg. She is, to date, the youngest successful graduate. She lives in Craighall Park and is currently teaching a teen class at Yoga Warrior on Friday afternoons and she would love to see more scholars and students benefit from the practice of yoga.
Teenagers go through a process of discovering that life is full of change, stress, peer conflicts, relationships, academics, life-altering decisions as well as finding their true identity. Yoga can be an amazing tool to help them become their best self while dealing with the day to day challenges that they face in these turbulent years.
Check out some of the benefits of yoga for teenagers:
-
Destress. Learn relaxation and breathing techniques which promote calm and stimulate the relaxation response.
-
Yoga is a full body workout. Yoga will build strength, increase flexibility, improve balance, stabilise core muscles, develop co-ordination, reduce tiredness, clear the mind, stimulate the immune system and invigorate the entire body.
-
Improves self-esteem. Yoga focuses on accepting the body as it is today while working towards improvement. It teaches correct posture so you walk with confidence in life, finding the beauty within as well as without.
-
Yoga provides a foundation for lifelong health. The yoga mat is a level playing field. There are no tests or competitions. Athletes will discover a wonderful cross-training tool. Non-athletes will learn to appreciate and care for their bodies. Learn good habits for life now.
So as a teenager you can reap the benefits of yoga immediately. Yoga means "to join" or "to unite" and helps to bring into harmony body, mind and breath. A regular yoga workout will engage your mind and challenge you on many levels. Discover how yoga can empower you with confidence and peace, so you can live your life to the fullest right now.
"Yoga is one of those times of day when you're doing something that you know other people think looks and sounds strange, but at the same time you really don't care. You feel good and that's all that matters. Yoga taught me to love and accept who I am, how I am and what I am. It taught me to value my inner being, not just my outside appearance. It taught me that being healthy starts from the inside out. It teaches you to be a stronger, more capable person beacuse Yoga invites you and accepts you, no matter what stage you are at in your life. Bad or good, your mat will always be there to catch you.
I feel the most beautiful when I've just finished a really challenging, strong class. My cheeks are rosy, my hair is messy, my clothes are drenched - and I feel brand new.
Yoga is like dancing in the dark... no one's watching, no one cares, and you're your most confident.
I love yoga!"
