Lets Hit the Beach Baby!

Decorating for a new baby is so much fun! Choosing furniture, selecting the right linen, looking at the different flooring options and then of course, painting the room. The only problem is... where do you start when it comes to deciding on colours or a theme for a newborn.

You could pick out a paint colour, apply it to the walls and be done or your could be creative and a little more adventurous than that, there are a lot of great ideas you could implement when it comes to designing a unique nursery for your baby. We decided to feature a nautical theme for a nursery.

With colours ranging from pale turquoise, shades of blue, red, green and yellow, a nautical theme is a wonderful way to introduce a rainbow of colour into a nursery for a boy or a girl.

Whales and dolphins, smiling sharks, shells, seahorses, colourful fish and boats can be incorporated to create a miniature wonderland. The joy of using these muted shades is that they are not overwhelming or too bright, yet still eye-catching enough to capture the attention and nurture the imagination of a little one.

No nautical theme would be complete without the linen and trimmings to match. Cot bumpers, night frills, bedding and curtaining can all be purchased in a wide choice of colours and designs, whatever theme you choose. We went shopping online to see what we could find to create our ‘Nautical Nursery’.

Decorating Idea for a Nautical Nursery
- Murals are a great way to introduce a theme to a nursery. If you don’t think you can paint a mural yourself, there are professional companies that undertake this service for you. Alternatively you could use wallpaper or self-adhesive graphic stickers that are easily applied.
- Try your hand at paint techniques such as sponging, ragging or colour washing to add atmosphere to your nursery. For a nautical theme you may want to consider painting the walls to resemble the ocean.

However you decide to go about painting your nursery, remember to keep in mind the décor that you are going to use for the room. The painting colours and techniques you use should go with everything else that you plan to use in the room. Don’t be afraid to be adventurous and try your hand at something new.

The best thing about decorating a room yourself is that if you don’t like how something turns out, you can always change it!
