Tamsin Mac Carthy Taking Experimental Witch To The Rome Festival

The Stories Of The Talented Writer/Director, Actress And Singer Tamsin Anne Mac Carthy

Tamsin Mac Carthy was born and raised in Johannesburg, and moved to Cape Town at the age of 15 after a terrible family tragedy. Tamsin has a diverse career, ranging from writing and directing to acting and singing. The “Experimental Witch Project” is probably her biggest accomplishment so far, as it has been selected to be screened at the Rome Film Festival in October 2009.

Tamsin attended Sandown High School in Johannesburg until the age of 15, after which she went to Camps Bay High School, where she matriculated with exemption. She started acting at the tender age of 5 and was performing on stage by the time she was 9. Her professional singing career commenced when she was 10 and worked as a voice over artist in Johannesburg, also performing in a number of stage productions and musicals with The Performing Arts Workshop.

She completed her four year Bachelors degree in Communication and Fine Arts at the Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. “I always knew that my destiny was in film. During my teens I realised that to do what I wanted to would mean that I would need to create my own projects and not be at the mercy of a fickle industry. So I shifted my focus to behind the camera. I chose Loyola Marymount University in LA due to its excellent reputation, which is recognized by the industry in Hollywood itself. My father’s colleagues there had recommended it to us,” says Tamsin.

After returning from Los Angeles, Tamsin further developed her talents and succeeded as a producer/director, completing a number of music videos, documentaries and notable short features which had screenings at festivals such as Cannes, Fespaco, Toronto and Berlin. All along she maintained her passion for music.

She heard about the “Experimental Witch Project” through one of her old work colleagues. “He wrote to me to tell me about it and said he thought I should enter. It came to me very late in the competition process, so I had very little time to decide to take the leap and pull the film together to meet the deadline,” says Tamsin. In August 2008, Paulo Coelho announced the winners of the revolutionary “Experimental Witch Project”. This experiment was an open invitation made by Paulo to adapt his book “The Witch of Portobello” for the screen as part of a worldwide competition. Tamsin was chosen as one of the 14 winners out of 6 000 submissions. It has now been announced that the “Experimental Witch” has been selected to be screened at the Rome Film Festival in October 2009.

Vicky Davis, a well-known South African actress and Pasella presenter (who also starred as Tessa in 7de Laan), is in the production with Tamsin. Vicky stars as “Athena McCain”, one of the pivotal characters of the book and Tamsin’s chosen narrator for her film adaptation. “I knew that together we would create an interesting dynamic on screen. I gave her the choice of roles between ‘Athena’ and ‘Andrea’, and after she decided, I took on the role of ‘Athena’,” comments Tamsin.

Tamsin describes herself as a driven, sensitive and empathetic. She explains that the part she loves most about the industry is the energy as well as the sense of family that develops with people she works with. Says Tamsin: “Winning the ‘Experimental Witch Project’ is definitely at the top of my list in terms of highlights in my career. It was a hard one to pull off and I’m still recovering.”

“The best advice that I can give people who want to make it in the industry, is to be tenacious, as authentic as humanly possible and driven,” Tamsin concluded.

Tamsin and Vicky (Davis) are represented by the prestigious Zuki Management agency in Cape Town.
