Why Get Organised In 2009?

Every year you make a promise – loose weight, spend more time with the kids, exercise, read more, smoke less, drink water, sort out the finances and get organised. But now it’s April and you have hit the ground running – reacting to the endless stream of calls, tasks, schedules, meetings – promising to plan, stop, smell the roses but never quite committing to the dream. Same old same old I guess, stuck in a rut and all that stuff.

Leanne Host, from Get Organised, explains why you should get organised this year and what difference it will make.

GET ORGANISED - CREATE TIME, REDUCE STRESS
South African’s waste millions of hours a year searching for missing information. Our schedules are oozing. We are juggling so many balls in the air just waiting for one to drop. We are rushing, chasing deadlines, left feeling stressed, frustrated and running late. What goes on in your space is a direct reflection of what goes on in your mind. Clearing the clutter gives you room to breathe – you get more done in less time and are able to plan and prioritise more effectively. Organisation limits the need for reactive decisions which are often critical within busy environments.

Fact: Timothy Ferriss, author of the number 1 New York Times bestseller “The 4-hour work week” says “…clutter creates indecision and distractions, consuming attention and making unfettered happiness a real chore”.

GET ORGANISED - SAVE MONEY, INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY
Even as an eternal optimist it is hard to miss the world wide concern that we are in the throws of a recession. Getting and staying organised ensures that you only surround yourself with the things you need, use and love. No more duplicates, no more penalties on late payments, no more excess and no more last minute shopping at premium prices. Being organised helps you stay focused allowing you to get more things done in less time.

Fact: Any accountant, bookkeeper, financial planner will tell you that before you get to grips with your finances you need to get organised with your paperwork. You need to know what you are spending now to make plans for how you are going to spend (and save) tomorrow. Suzie Orman, international bestselling author and financial guru, regularly mentions in her books how “Money can’t see its way through clutter and chaos and confusion”.

GET ORGANISED - BE KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT
Paperwork is the single biggest contributor to clutter in homes and offices. Despite astounding computer programs that can do just about everything but feed the dog and the promise of moving towards a more paperless society, paper build up is more prevalent now than ever. We are rushing around, taking on more responsibility with less staff and never enough hours. Printing copies of emails, memos, invoices and training manuals is common practice in most offices; as is excessive amounts of unwanted, unused stationery supplies and half used filing cabinets. Our carbon footprint is swelling at an astounding rate yet we forget to reduce – reuse – recycle.

Fact: Once you are organised you are better able to make  decisions with your stuff. Being organised allows you to pass on what you no longer need, you will know what you have (immediately) and where to find it (in a couple of seconds).

Get Organised offers hands-on organising sessions for homes and offices, organising products, workshops and take-action inspirational talks.   Couldn't agree more - no one is organised, from the president, government, municipalities, Eskom, schools, retail stores, to the ordinary man in the street. Our lives are filled with things and non essentials. We are a society out of control and heading for disaster if we don't quickly learn to stop and smell the roses. Concentrate on the necessary and leave out the unnecessary.
